Castle Cary
Castle Cary, South Somerset
Mixed housing development scheme
A high density but highly attractive scheme has been prepared using similar principles to those famously employed by Lion Krier at his Poundbury scheme in Dorchester, designed to integrate with, and link to the historical market town of Castle Cary. Included in the proposals was the conversion of a number of listed buildings, including the last operating horse hair factory in Britain (John Boyd Mill).
The proposal is a mix of 2,3 & 4 bedroom houses and villas, with an apartment block of 7 flats, all set around urban squares. The site has a number of important trees with TPO’s, which have affected the layout of the scheme. Traditional local materials and detailing are incorporated within the design.
