Brent Pelham Hall
Hertfordshire
Restoration of existing buildings and surrounding landscape
The scheme is designed to reflect the original layout of the grounds, enhancing the restored hall and reinstating its relationship with St Mary’s church and the surrounding landscape. Existing structures are brought back into use, 20th-century fragmentations are removed and an integrated scheme based on extending the historical grid incorporates current family uses. The restored and extended gardens are bringing back the life and setting of the hall, respecting the hierarchy of the historic spaces and incorporating 21st-century domestic requirements for a house of this status.
The Parkland: While the formal gardens were laid out to the west of the house, a rather lose arrangement of parkland to the east has been confused by 19th- and 20th-century building additions and a rather crude fish pond. The proposed scheme restores the parkland landscape and soften and extend the steep banks of the fish pond to create a lake with marginal plants that are more sensitive to wildlife and the visual flow of the land.
