Cecil Sawmill

Hatfield Estate, Hertfordshire

Cecil Sawmill was†originally the†Hatfield Estate corn mill. In 1881 the mill wheel was adapted to drive dynamos for Hatfield House, which was one of the first houses in the country to have electric light.

With Anthony Downs of Gascoyne Cecil Estates, the mill was carefully restored and converted to office space over four floors and the ground floor was extended with a new†oak structure to form an entrance.

Heating for the mill is provided by a water source heat pump set into the adjacent mill pool, which†has†the added benefit of comfort cooling in summer.†Consideration has been given to the reinstatement of the dynamo, and this could be fitted retrospectively when viable in the future.
