Lowndes Square
Brooks Murray refurbished a period property within the Kensington and Chelsea Hans Town Conservation Area. Lowndes Street comprises a number of stucco fronted terraced houses which show different interpretations of the stucco material. The fragmented appearance of the terrace is further underlined by subtle variations in storey heights and detailing between adjacent buildings, including the muted external approach at 42-44 to the more elaborate detailing between 37-39.
The proposed design, was to convert the office and residential building into two residential units, including internal and external alteration and improvements to 40 Lowndes Street, a mansard roof extension and a rear extension. The project aimed to refurbish the existing structure sympathetically both internally and externally – retaining and enhancing the existing features.
Internal partitions which were not original, were removed wherever possible, to result in the original quality of the interior space. The central light well is retained, as is the existing roofline. The introduction of a lift is proposed within the existing light well and staircase. Waste pipes are removed from the front elevation, the Thomas Cubitt balustrading is reinstated and the first floor French windows are matched.
