Salisbury Square Complete
Salisbury Square is complete, returning new homes, trade and life to the centre of Old Hatfield.
The scheme knits the historic core back together and returns through-access to the centre. It has rebuilt Arm & Sword Lane and replaced the mid-twentieth century buildings at the centre of the Old Hatfield with a new mixed-use quarter: three shops at the ground floor, six office units and three apartments above, and five new townhouses completing the street scene.
Salisbury Square has been a long time in the making. Brooks Murray were commissioned to work on it even before the Old Hatfield Charrette in 2008, and the project has since passed through every stage of the development process from original vision, deep community engagement, planning, legal agreements, viability and ultimately construction – all through the uncertainties and upheavals of the past twenty years, including and not limited to a global recession and a pandemic.
That it has been delivered is a testament to a consistent vision and the dogged determination of the Gascoyne Estates to see it through.
Good design here meant stitching the new development properly into its surroundings. At Brewers Row, we worked from a close study of the neighbourhood, its materials palette, its vernacular detailing, and the relationship between private and public space, so that what is delivered fits in as a natural part of Old Hatfield. The buildings follow the Hatfield Design Code in their traditional detailing that meets contemporary environmental standards.
Our thanks go to the residents of Old Hatfield, to Gascoyne Estates, and to Boom Construction who have built out the square with real pride, and risen to the challenge of delivering a standard above and beyond the norm.
